On a very hot summer day, you notice a dog inside a locked car in a grocery
store parking lot. What would you do?
I'd probably be
so distrasted and preoccupied that it wouldn't even register with me.

Get the plate number
and car description and have the store politely announce over the PA that
they forgot to drop their windows a bit. Also, depending on the nature
of the dog, I might first check to see if the car's unlocked.

I'd
ask the service desk people in the grocery store to make an announcement
over the P.A. system that there's a dog locked inside a hot car and that
the Humane Society will be called in ten minutes if the dog is stil locked
up at that time. Then I'd make the phone call if necessary.

First,
I'd get very angry. Then, I would ask around to try and find the someone
that left their dog in the car... failing that, I would call animal control
or the police. That is a cruel thing to do.

I'd
tell the store manager so he could notify the authorities. If he wouldn't
do it, I'd call the police. I might even hang around and if the dog looked
about to expire, I might break a window.

Note
the license plate and ask the store manager to page the owner.

I
would like to think that I would take action. I have not seen this personally,
though I have seen dogs in cars with the windows down and obviously stressed.
In those cases, I waited for the owner to come out. Both times it was
a short period. Had they not come out, I would have called the police.

Call
the police; because in Florida it's illegal for that to happen.

I
have seen dogs locked inside cars in supermarket lots. First, I stop at
the courtesy desk and try to have the offending shopper paged. Thus far,
this has always worked. If the shopper couldn't be found, I'd have no
hesitation calling the police.

I
would call the police. I already did the exact same thing last summer,
except the car was at Red Lobster, not the grocery store.
Tam
I'd
go inside the store and make the store manager page the owner of the car
and make sure they got their dog and some serious lecture from me.

I
would contact 911 and find some way to open the doors. This past summer
I came upon the same situation while entering a fast food restaurant.
There was a dog sitting in the front seat in a parked car. It was about
98 degrees outside. As I walked up to the car, I noticed the car was still
running with the A/C on high. The "parents" where just inside
watching from the window. I saw no threat and thought it was nice how
they would allow their car to run to ensure their pooch was comfy.

If
you had said the mall, I might have gone in and complained, but you'd
figure that in a grocery store the person would be out soon. Now if I
went in, did all my shopping, came back out and the dog was still there
in the car, then I would go back in and tell them...have the person paged
or something. It's really sad. It's like people don't understand how incredibly
hot it gets in a car in the summer. Have they forgotten how it feels to
get in the car themselves?

It
depends, and probably nothing. Being a pet owner, One CAN run into a store
for 10 Min or less, and HEY, guess what? The pet will be Okay. If I 'happened'
to notice the pet was in the car "too long", I would definitely
call the police.

I
would see if the door was unlocked in the front seat. If it was, I would
open the back door and open it just enough so the dog could stick its
head out. I might even call the humane society.

I
see that a lot. Usually I find someone of senior authority to announce
it over the tannoy.

I'd
quickly copy down the license number of the car then go into the store
and ask them to announce the number and the situation over the loudspeaker.
If no one came forward I'd call 911.

Possibly
go in and tell the service desk---other than that, despite the fact that
it bothers me, I don't think theres a whole lot I could/would do.

First
I'd go in the grocery store and have them make an announcement. If somebody
didn't come after some time, I'd call the police to come do something
about it; if the police didn't make it in time, I'd have to break a window.
