How do you feel about comparing the salaries of teachers to the salaries of athletes?

As I do about comparing apples and oranges.

Jane, 63
West Linn, OR USA

I'll bet my view is like that of many others. It's RIDICULOUS that athletes make so much more than those who teach 'the future minds of America'. It's so ridiculous that I don't know what to say. It's just something that we can do nothing about.

I'd say it's like comparing apples and oranges, but I've never understood the apples/oranges thing.
They're both types of fruit--why can't you compare them? However, as I'm sure many other people will say, it's a sad commentary on American society for famous athletes to make more than teachers--at least, good teachers. As for comparing the two groups' salaries--I don't see the point.

Karen, 23

Well given the need for so many teachers I doubt we as a society could afford to pay all of them at the levels most professional athletes get paid. The two professions are so uncompareable in so
many respects I'm not sure we should even try. However, it is sad that US culture seems to value the athlete over the teacher.

Athletes get paid too much; they are childrens' idols. Teachers don't get paid enough; they are God's gift to children.

You can't compare the two...it is like comparing apples and Taco Salad...if you are asking me whether teachers are under paid, and atheletes get paid too much...well, of course...but that is how the system works...personally, I think Randy Moss should have his pay reduced to what a teacher makes for moving a traffic officer out of the way with his car...when she had the
nerve to do her job...

Cladius, 31

It's never crossed my mind. I thought teachers' salaries got compared to firemen and nurses.

Aly, 17

It's like comparing apples and oranges.

Laura, 37

I've never understood the comparisons or the complaints, it's a total apples and oranges situation.

Alias Irrelevante

It doesn't bother me. Salaries are based on supply and demand, not value to society. You have to take the long view, anyway. Your afterlife is based on your value to society.

Cathie, 53

Apples and oranges. Life is full of inequities. How happy are teachers vs. how happy are millionaire football players whose friends are based on their millions and whose family tries to take advantage of them?

Cindy, 41

Teachers should definitely be the heroes of our society and should be getting the salaries of the athletes!

Tam

Being that I am a teacher, it makes me very sad. I see what I do every day and how hard I work to make sure the children have what they need to move on in life (including athletes...they were in school once upon a time too) and I know I should make more for what I do. I don't expect things to
change either!

I think that is two totally different careers however, I believe that teachers should get alot more that what they are being paid now. Who teaches those kids that grow up to be doctors, football athletes, and scientists? The people that get only $32,000 a year. The people they teach grow
up to get double, triple or even millions on the work from these low paid and appreciated people.

It is pretty scary what we hold in such high esteem and set such a value on.

Janet, 45

Comparisons may be odious, but they are inevitable. If the question deals with the relative value of teaching and ball playing to our society, I vote for teaching.

Jill, 61

Without teachers, the future generation would be ignorant, would have no jobs, the world would probably be in a state worse than it was 3000000 years ago.

Without athletes...... I can't think of anything important that would happen. Teachers are so much more important, their presence in this world makes a different.

Athletes? Not really.

Merve, 14

There is no comparison, and I think there's something way wrong with that.

Fisch, 47

the amount of money that is given to athletes for playing some silly sports while teachers are in schools, teaching the future leaders of america, is pathetic. teachers are so looked down
upon for trying to get our kids in gear while athletes are always praised for their 'great' sports accomplishments. does this picture make sense? i didn't think so either.

Nathalie

Obviously, teachers really deserve to be paid more. However, since this is a capitalistic society, I don't know how you'd change it. I certainly wouldn't want the government to step in and adjust it.

Judy, 62
Easton, KS USA

I work as a teacher and I think it is terrible. Teachers should make much more money than athletes throwing around a ball. Teachers are making the future leaders of tomorrow.
