The only thing that comes to mind is the presidential election of November 2000. This was a crazy election, with lawyers and lawsuits flying, all centering around three counties in one state (a state that happened to be governed by one candidate's brother, thereby fueling tempers). It was several weeks before we knew who had won, and even several years later, supporters of the losing candidate, Al Gore, argue that "They were robbed" and that President George W. Bush "stole the White House".
I don't know what to think about their claims. Still, I do think that perhaps the electoral college election process should be re-examined and perhaps done away with.

The day we actually went to war in Iraq. It confirmed we were not in control of our government.
The United States has become irrationally polarized.
Too soon to tell. History may focus on something that today seems minor, while seeminginly vital events will fade to trivia.
