I hate to admit this, but the flag doesnt really mean anything to me anymore. Once upon a time it did...
The flag doesn't really mean all that much to me. It's a big piece of fabric. We see them anywhere. Burn them in protest or don't. Don't matter to me.
My country, on the other hand, means a lot to me. It is my home. I would die to protect it, if I had to.
A symbol of the country. But I don't think there is the emotional involvement that there was a generation or two ago. Those of us who lived through the sixties, when "the flag" became a symbol of the extreme right, find it is tarnished.
The flag means alot to me. I think of all the men and women who fought for that symbol, so that we may have the right to burn, protest and disagree about it. You have that freedom because of someone's sacrafice to fight for our country and that is our flag, yes, just a symbol, but our symbol.
The flag is a symbol--but burning the flag is free speech, not desecration.
