It was a Monday so I had to go to work. We don't get birthdays off. I got an e-card from my sister-in-law and my nephew. My daughters (both out of town) sent presents. I celebrated on the weekend with family.
We had a small family party on the preceding Sunday. On my birthday, I had an excellent Japanese lunch with my daughter and a friend gave a small dinner party for me.
I just celebrated a milestone this month -- 40. My husband surprised me and baked a cake for me, decorated it and put 40 candles on it. He lit the candles and sang Happy Birthday. You have to know my husband... he can't carry a tune in a wheelbarrow and he never baked a cake before in his life. He also bought me a half dozen red roses which I found in vases throughout the house. It was the sweetest gift I've ever had. Also, at my request, my mother-in-law and sisters ordered perennials for me. And my sisters took me out to a fancy-schmancy restaurant.
I don't remember. I only turned 31, so I'm not old enough for alzheimer's yet.
Ok, I remember now. My husband arranged babysitting with his mother, then took me out for dinner at a steakhouse. It is so rare to get a night away from the kids, much less have an expensive restaurant meal. We ordered an appetizer dip made with cheese, spinach and artichokes that you eat on corn chips. I had the steak and shrimp combo with a baked potato.
He gave me a very special gift. It is a charm bracelet of the type that has become popular of late. The bracelet is made of rectangular links. On each link, is a picture or word. For my birthday, there was 1 link with a cake and one link with the word "MOM". This past Christmas, 2004, Santa brought me a third link, one with a snowman.
After dinner, we went back to Grandma's, where we had cake for dessert with our children.

I dealt with family crises in my husband's family. Fortunately, I've learned over the years to hoard a guaranteed good book for birthday reading.
A fairly crazy party with loads of my friends...
