I dont know. I hope they are and that the violence does die down after, like the reports say. My brother was just sent back to Iraq last week (he was there for a year when we first invaded) for another year and I just hope and pray that the elections will help set up a new government so our troops can come back home.
In the morning newspaper there was a political cartoon with an Arab in robes, finger marked to show he'd voted, sitting in front of a jigsaw puzzle, "Democracy", with hundreds and thousands of puzzle pieces pouring out of the box.
The Arab had assembled five or six pieces.
The voting was a beginning. I hope a next step is to feature women as part of the solution.
I'm not sure how to measure success. I think they are a good step towards the Iraqi people taking charge of their country, getting the kinds of government they want and being collectively responsible for the actions of their country.

I'm not sure what would make them successful. I doubt that the results will conform to the ideals of a democratic society.

I think they will be.
I hope that they will be successful. It was very exciting to see people voting when they have never voted before...
