I only attended a community college
about 10 years ago. I was in the Liberal Arts program with heavy emphasis on psychology
and was only 12 credits away from attaining an
Associate's degree before leaving due to ill health. It wasn't easy going back to
school after 20 years, and with a toddler at home as well...but I enjoyed every moment of
it and truly excelled at it. One of my professors told the class one day that in his
opinion, college is wasted on the young. I could almost believe that as most of my
"classmates" were there for one reason...because their parents were MAKING them
go,or so that they didn't have to work. I'm hoping my daughter will go to college much
younger than I did though.

Jill, 60
Saylorsburg, PA USA
I graduated high school in May 1997
at the age of 16. In late August 1997 I moved into a
dorm at Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD. The first semester went pretty well;
I took Education and Deaf Culture classes as preparation for the Deaf Education program. I
also took Acting and French classes and ended up with a 3.0 GPA.
I turned 17 during the January intersession
(which I spent doing temp work in my hometown), and then returned to school for French
Literature, ASL, Psychology, English Literature, and Tap Dance classes. Somehow I had
managed to develop depression and very quickly stopped going to classes; I missed most of
my final exams and failed most of my classes. It was decided that I would take one or two
semesters off and return. In Fall 1998 I tried taking some classes at my local community
college - I had Women's Literature and Human Sexuality classes - but quickly dropped out
and moved in with my girlfriend in northern Virginia. This semester, Fall 2001, I'm taking
night classes in ASL at Gallaudet University and plan to get an interpreter's certification sometime in the next
couple of years. I'll probably do that for a while, then hopefully go back to school
and finish up my Deaf Education plans.
