Have
you ever felt that you were unfairly discriminated against?Oh all the time...all
through primary school. Teachers and students used to tell me to "go back to your own
country" just because I'm Bangladeshi.

I can't really say that has ever
happened to me... I've been lucky.

I've been condescended to because of my sex,
but never discriminated against.

yes

Oh yeah. I'm involved in a lawsuit against a
former employer right now. Also, because I have visible tattoos and piercings, I feel that
when I go to some upper-end stores, they look down at me. Like my money isn't good enough
for them. *Whatever*. It's their loss.

Feeling discriminated against was a frequent
feeling as a child--and as an adolescent. As an aging adult, I'm feeling this way less and
less frequently.

During my mid to late 20s I really
felt that being a young woman in the workplace really worked against me. My male friends
were in jobs and positions paying more and being given
more responsibility. It sucked. But I don't think this was really discrimination.

Absolutely. It was a case of flat out
reverse discrimination. I had applied for an administrative/dispatcher job at the local
police department. I was called for the testing and took and passed all three with flying
colors. I had an interview with the chief of police and the lieutenant in charge.
Everything went incredibly well and they
both stated that I was the best qualified for the job. About a week later, I wondered why
I hadn't been called. I contacted a friend of mine who works closely with the department
and he was told that they apparently had two other candidates they had been considering
but were not crazy about their oral test scores or either of their interviews. However,
there were no African Americans or Latin Americans working at the station (other than two
cops) and they "had to go with a minority." Both other candidates were
minorities. I was pissed as hell about this incident.

Yes I have, just because I was a teenager.
I've been stopped specifically at stores by personnel so that they could look through my
things to make sure I hadn't stolen anything-which I hadn't.

Some, but if a program is really
good and I use it a lot, I pay for it if I can (I do
have a couple that aren't available in the U.S., but I would pay for them if I could).
GraphicConverter was a great investment!

Yeah. I did to a mild extent the first year
I was at camp because of the people there were dark-haired. I felt like a lot of people
were staring at me, and one girl was pretty rude to me, but maybe she was just rude in
general. Mostly, I feel like discrimination has taken a toll on my ability to get jobs.
Employers tend to discriminate against outsiders, and it's hard to get anyone to respect
what you can do or what you have to say when you're a young woman. The men in my family
also frequently act like I have no valuable input to offer.
Sadly, you can't force people to respect you
even if you deserve respect.

About 30 years ago, I worked nights in a
pharmacy at a rehabilitation hospital in Houston. The pharmacy was located in the basement
and as it was a small hospital, I was the only one working that shift. I delivered
hospital supplies to any nursing station that needed them. One night a patient who was
ready to go home, came down to the pharmacy and raped me. The next day I reported this
incident to my supervisor about it who promptly fired me and hired a man. We've come a
l-o-n-g way and this could no longer happen now.

Yes I feel I have been unfairly
discriminated. It was a job I had at the local hopsital
and I was taking care of my sick inlaws and I would be late for work because I would have
to help one of them just as I was leaving for work. So the hospital asked me to take a
leave till we had decided what we would do with the situation. So when my fatherinlaw
passed I went back and asked for my job and they said they had no money to pay for my
training, now I was only gone 4 months. I had not forgotten what I was trained and I had
the book if I had any questions and I staed that to the Dept. Mamager. But I had found out
that they had hired several youger girls than me, they were collage age. So I feel and so
do others that they discriminated agaisnt me due to my age.

I dont know if it would be considered
discrimination, but it seems as if sales clerks treat me differently depending on how I'm
dressed. The better dressed I am, the better service I receive...

Occasionally but
usually it's because of my age (try being a 16 year old for the first month and 1/2 of
your freshman year of college. it sucked.)

I used to
go door-to-door with an environmental company, talking about issues, and trying to raise
money. I know door-to-door people are annoying, but most people kindly turned me away.
Now, I have a few piercings, some noserings, and I remember one woman at a door told me to
come back when I took my piercings out. I argued that they reflected nothing about my
personality, seeing as I was politically aware and a pretty good college student. She said
she didn't care, that they reflected a lot more about a person's personality than I let
on, that she couldn't trust a person with noserings, and that I was an irresponsible
trouble-maker. Her 12-year-old daughter even told me I needed to grow up. I don't think my
impulse to smack her daughter would have been any less had I not had piercings!

Unfortunately
yes. But I think people are all together too mean lately in so many ways. Sometimes I
think they forget that other people are human beings too and not garbage to yell at.
