Who is your favorite artist and why?

I don't really have a favorite artist, but I do have an appreciation for art. I have a print in my room of The First Kiss (two cherubs) which I adore, but I wouldn't say I have a favorite artist.

Hard to pick a favorite and which art to pick. In painting, I have for awhile liked Vermeer and Sargent for their ability to capture light and render their subjects with a sense of aliveness. I also like Whislter's watercolors, amazing to me that anyone can paint with that medium. As for sculpture, I have always liked Rodin for the eery figures he brought to life (although his personal life left something to be desired) and I'm amazed that anyone could render such life into stone as Michelangelo. I have been moved by the video art of Bill Viola, jolted by the performance art of Guillermo Gomez Pena, and challenged by the film work of Maya Daran. There are countless unfamous photographers who have an eye that I don't posses, an old acquaintence Antigone Radunovich is such a person..

And of course there are the countless individuals in my day to day life that are amazing artists. If nothing for the fact that they continue to have vision and seek creativity despite  the culture in which we live.  Which doesn't appreciate such passion and would prefer to pay you gobs of money to fix a computer bug rather than paint a great picutre or snap a meaningful image.

I've always had a fondness for the Neolithic sculptor who painstakingly liberated the form of the first Wittenberg Venus from the surrounding rock. In face and form, she is a woman both appreciated and adored.

Van Gogh.  Mostly because I like the way he used color.

John William Waterhouse.
I love the whole Pre-Raphaelite movement, but
Waterhouse's art always calls to me. I have several prints, quite a few books, and have even researched a few of his paintings. I don't know why... it's just beautiful.

Artist is kind of a broad term. I think of writers as artists, but since I could go on about writers all day, I think I'll leave them out of the equation. I love Ansel Adams, Gustave Baumann (did I spell that right?), and J.D. Marston when it comes to photographers. I've met J.D. Marston, and he seems like a good guy. He really has an eye for the land I love (Colorado), too. I've had two artist roommates, and I love their projects. Rye's new woman sculpture is extremely cool, and nobody could forget Allison's Cactus Lady. Then there are cartoons, and. . .well, that's enough.  The phone's ringing

My current answer would be Lenny Bruce out of respect for his fight to prove that there is no reason why syllables should have more power than the people who use them.

Depends on the art.  For the sake of arguement, I will say Stanley Kubrick for his combination of visual and auditory beauty.

Sam Cooke - For being my inspiration. For breathing his life, soul and energy into every performance. I think he was one of the greatest performers of his time and beyond. There will never be anyone else like him. I love every song and every word.

Only one? Rembrandt for his capturing of light, Monet for sheerly beautiful scenes, Georgia O'Keefe for her vision.

Rembrandt captures something immensely humane in his subjects.

Probably Van Gogh. His art has a sense of disorder, but it's a good disorder that makes you sit up and really look at the painting.

Well...I guess it would depend on what kind of artist....picture art, music art etc....All in all my favorite artist would be Jim Morrison of the Doors.…

My favorite painter is the late John William Waterhouse, he has done such wonderful authurian artwork and I love all of it. My favorite singer is Cree Summer, because she has unique and powerful lyrics. My favorite writer is Natalie Goldberg, she is my insperation for my continuing efforts to write and make a career out of it. And last but not least, my favorite web designer is Maganda, of maganda.org! She almost was nominated for a webby award, but didn't win it.

Monet. I like the French impressionists.

I probably have two favorite artists. One is the painter Gustav Klimt.  I love his use of pattern and color, especially gold. Its kind of gaudy but not really. It intrigues me. I also love Claus Oldenburg. He is a pop artist. He does oversized sculptures of everyday things like hamburgers and clothespins. Its iincredibly interesting but I don't know why. I guess they are just fun! I also love oriental art as a genre. Again it is the use of color and pattern. On the surface it can look very simple and clean, but as you look deeper, it is incredibly complicated with pattern and color.

Monet. I could look at his paintings all day long.

. . .I'm going to assume you mean "visual artist", as in someone whose art would or could be in a gallery or a museum. . . .I ain'ts too much cultured in this area, although one day I hopes to be. . . .I like the whole Monet thing from a hundred fifty years ago. . .the lush, colorful paintings that captured how wonderful it was to be rich and without a material care in the world. . . I like abstract expressionism too, but it doesn't hit me on the same visceral level. . .
