If you had to perform community service, what would you choose to do?

I would work with animals, I love them so much and have already done a lot  of volunteer work at pet shelters and stores.

Had to perform community service? I have always done some form of community service since the age of 15. I was brought up to believe that one had an obligation to repay society for its support by sharing one's time and talents with those who need them. I've served on the boards of many non-profit organizations, from neighborhood programs to a major NYC service agency. I've  worked on a crisis line, established programs for children and the elderly, been a docent at an historic home, and held various roles  within my college Alumnae Association.

A friend of mine, busted for giving out drugged cookies in a (college) art  class, got her hours at the local library, checking in books. This sounds almost worth making weed-cookies for. However, since I realize that I am a burly MAN, I predict that I will be hosing down the elephant pen or diggin' dem ditches, like my daddy always warned me I would.

I'd probably choose to work for a no-kill animal shelter.

"I was an advisor for juvenile delinquents, I'd stand on the corner and warn them if the cops were coming."- Emo Philips This sounds about right. Or maybe I'd help out with DARE (Destroy All Religious Egomaniacs)

Although not arrested or convicted, I currently do working in a community service capcity bringing technology to the masses.   If I were forced to do some sort of penitence for wrong acts, I would gladly do anyting that needed help or assistance.

At the risk of sounding like a censorious senior citizen--although there are more despicable points of view to articulate-- I'm going to quibble a bit with the wording of the question. "If you HAD to perform community service, what would you choose to do?" To my mind, everyone owes the community they inhabit some form of service. When I was paying my dues, raising children, I was an active PTA member and a den mother and a high school chaperone. I helped out at Planned Parenthood and did nature study lessons with the GirlScouts and tutored backward students in reading.

At present, most of my community service is writing checks to the volunteer firemen and the ambulance corps and the two local libraries and the Rape Crisis Center and the Salvation Army Building Fund. More personally, for the last 20 years I've managed the financial affairs of two mentally ill adults. Finally, although my contribution to roadway beautification is limited to a hundred yards on either side of our driveway, I toddle back and forth, leaning on my walker and using my extend-an-arm gadget to pick up

Is cleaning up litter an option?

I actually have done voluntary work with middle-school kids, the homeless and currently I am working with the Lakota Indians in South Dakota. I  believe in helping people in everything I do, but if I had to perform community service it would be something like what my friend Doug does. He enables the helpless addicts where I live to get their lives back. I admire amazing people like him. I offered to be a voluntary Police officer here and I got called, but my new job and classes had to take precedence. There's a time for everything.
