Have you ever lied or grossly exaggerated on an important job application? If so, about what?

No. I sincerely believe that what you put out in the world comes back to you, so if you lie there will be negative repercussions.

Cindy, 41
VA USA

No, I wouldn't say I've lied or GROSSLY exaggerated. I think most people exaggerate a bit so that it looks like they're more qualified than they are (elaborating on past jobs, etc.). And of course, people pretty much tell potential employers stuff that will make them look attractive as potential employees. But I'm pretty honest.

I did once many, many years ago. It's against the law now to ask about health issues on a job application but it didn't used to be. During the 60s, I had epilepsy and when I was applying for a job, I knew I'd be turned down if I admitted to having this disease so I lied and said I didn't have any health problems. I was found out and fired from the job for lying.

Reba, 57
Gaithersburg, MD USA

No...maybe that's why I need two jobs.

Alias Irrelevante

Other than putting some minor things on the resume that sounded more impressive then they actually were, I if anything have a tendency to understate my qualifications.

Felicia, 36
Lowell, MA USA

No. Aside from the ethical issue, I work in a technical field where misstating my qualifications would be immediately apparent.

Jane, 63
West Linn, OR USA

no, but then generally the job applications ive filled out have been for things where theres not a whole lot of reason to exagerate

Cara, 18
Valparasio, IN USA

No. I'd think that would not only get you fired if it was discovered, but would give you a bad reference for getting another job.

Judy, 62
Easton, KS USA

Yes. I lied about lag-time between jobs. Both businesses had since closed so I knew it couldn't be checked. I had really taken a hiatus from working for a little over a year but that never looks too impressive on an application. Never got caught and did get the job!

Fisch, 47
Preston, CT USA

No...I'd be too afraid of

Tam

School...Said I graduated from college.

Stephanie, 25
TX USA

Let me put it to you this way...if I had, there is NO WAY I would still be stuck doing the same brain-dead crap I have been doing for 5 years...I probably should have done that about 5 years ago...well, too late too start doing that now...d'oh!

Frodo, 31
Middle Earth

No. Why would I want a job doing something I wasn't qualified to do? That would be more stress than it's worth.

Cathie, 53
Novi, MI USA

Nope. How are you going to get that one by? I know in my line of work they call all your references and test your skills. I could never get away with it!

Tracy, 24
Ocean City, NJ USA

NO. I don't even remember the last time I filled out a job application.

Janet, 45
E. Brunswick, NJ USA

Absolutely not. It's untruthful. And I'm brilliant enough, I don't need to exaggerate.

Laura, 37
Lowell, MA USA

No, I'd be too afraid of being caught in the lie.

Tam

no i haven't

Hoochie

No, because I feel that I have been qualified enough at each job I've applied for that there would be no reason to lie or exaggerate.

Melodi, 19
Gahanna, OH USA

Not that I can remember. I may have exaggerated a TINY bit, but never anything that would get me in any trouble.

Doug2, 30
Kansas City, KS USA

Not particularly. I mean, you have to have the skills to back up your claims, other wise you got nothin'.
