Why is art important?

It lets people express themselves in terms of their time periods.

Karen, 22

It is an expression of the human spirit.

Art is important because it is all around us in more forms than we'll ever know. It's important to learn about it, who put it there, and why. Most people would probably disagree with his, but I love art and I'm glad we have it!

wow, this is a question that can't be answered in one little paragraph! Art is important because it is the way that we can express ourselves when words fail. Art can be used to heal in times of pain, and capture your joy in times of happiness. Art can be a symbol of a place or a time period. Art can be a way to get into the heads of people that have come before you, or understand cutlures you would never have contact with aside from seeing pieces of their art.

I may be in the minority here, but to me, art really isn't important. I'm sure it is to people who are artists - I'm not - and to people who look at art. I don't. In nearly every case, I think the real thing is better than an artistic rendition of same. (This answer is probably elementary because I'm sure there's a lot more to art than what 'meets the eye.' But when I think of art, I think of painting or drawing.)

P.S. This is a very unsatisfactory answer, but I've thought about this question all day and this is the best I could come up with.

Because it's a form of communication.

I believe Oscar Wilde when he says that life imitates art far more than art imitates life. Artists create their vision of our world or how the world feels to them. They can put a single sensation into a picture and other people catch on to this. Art expresses the creativity of human beings. Emotions that are too strong for words or feelings that are only associated

Art is important because it shows us the beautiful things in this world, it expresses through music, color, or body language those things and emotions which cannot be expressed merely in words.

I'm not exactly sure. It could be cause it allows one to express their feelings, ideas, and beliefs in a way that passes many barriers. It might be that it allows us to express the creative spirit that is deep within us. Or it could be that it helps to fill a void in one's life (ie. music in the silence or color on my living wall). Just my thoughts.

Art expresses emotions, concepts, ideas in non-verbal ways. Art brings beauty in the world. Art presents ideas with a different perspective.

becuase it is beautiful

I think it depends on the kind of art. I think paintings are important, because they can be used to show different periods in time. Music is the art form that I identify with the most, and I think its very important. Studies have shown that children who have some sort of musical education tend to learn better, and go farther in life. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have music in my life.

art is important because its a part of all cultures and culture is what makes up life and plus art is in everthing so of course its important

I'm not sure it is important, persay. It depends what your definition of art is. If you mean art in the strictest sense, paintings and photographs and whatnot, I guess stuff like photography can be important for capturing and holding through the years the spirit of our times, so people in the distant future can get a taste of what we are experiencing.

I think it can help those who have trouble thinking outside the box. Art in any form is pretty cool. Collectively, it reveals tons of shit about the society it came from.

Fisch, 46

It allows people to express themselves and allows other people to enjoy/appreciate that expression.
