What is your favorite birthday celebration?

My favorite birthday celebration would be, as Mama Cass said "to go somewhere where she's never been before." And although I ask for this each year, I've never gotten it yet.

My favorite birthday was years and years ago. I had just come out of a dehabilitating marriage and was painstakingly organizing an independent life. My son who had just turned 13 years old, organized a surprise party in my honor--guests and wine and all.

Never had them.

Any birthday celebration that brings happy people together is good. One of my favorites was when my daughter and son-in-law arranged a Champagne brunch for me.

My mother, my cousin and I all had birthdays within 4 days of each other. Almost every year we'd get together and celebrate "the birthdays" with the entire family. The tradition ended when my cousin moved to Florida and I moved to Georgia. When my mother died, my birthday became a sad day rather than a day of celebration. I feel very bittersweet on my birthday now because my mother isn't with me to celebrate.

Our family tends to celebrate all week long. There's dinner with the girls, then dinner with my husband, then dinner with the family, lunch at work . ..tis good to party.

Typical of me, quiet and at home with just those closest to me. I do like to have a cake, and gifts are always a plus! :)
