Do you indulge yourself with any pet superstitions?

I'm very fond of touching wood in moments of stress--not with an ostentatious rapping, but with a touch to remind myself of reality beyond the immediate present.

Probably. Sometimes I knock on wood. . .I don't knowwhat else I do.

I believe firmly that if you send out bad vibes to machines they will rebel and therefore I always try to be kind them.   I consult my horoscope weekly and while I don't treat it as gospel I do try to find the wisdom of the reading there.  I believe that the placement of objects create an oogy feeling.  I will consult the tarot (and the occassional 8 ball) when I am feeling down.  Of course, none of these are rational and I can find a pseudo-scientific explanation for why they work for me, but deep inside I know they are my accommodations to powers outside of my own mind.

There are some computer troubleshooting things that I do without a specific reason that aren't always completely rational. I label things I do an exact reason as supersition.

For example, I am reluctant to plug and unplug things from a computer unless it is turned off. Something things like SCSI and PS/2 mice, have documented problems with hot-swapping. Other things like serial mice or monitors do not.

Sadly, no. I've tried to believe in them, but for some reason, they never seem to work.

Sure, Their usually situational based on how much anxiety I'm feeling. The one that stands out is the belief that talking about something to some invites disaster.

I throw salt over my left shoulder whenever I pour salt, in case some of it has spilled.I say a "Hail Mary" prayer whenever I see an ambulance go by. I knock on wood whenever I profess a wish or desire, or state something I do not want to be jinxed. I avoid opening umbrellas indoors and walking under ladders.

I don't like to touch a dog's nose. I forget why.

I used to be convinced that if I walked into a dark room at night and turned on the light, I'd be shot by the sniper who was on the roof across the street. Consequently, I would flatten myself against the wall that was between me and the window, snake my arm around and turn on the light.

But that's more paranoid, overactive imagination from watching too many TV cop programs than pet superstition.

My boyfriend is a Detroit cop and I wear a necklace that he gave me everyday that he works so that he will come home to me safely at the end of his shift. Also, if I can, I watch him get dressed for work, that seems to make me feel better too.

I don't really know whether or not I'm superstitious. I'm undecided about the whole mystical-magical thing, actually. I think anything could be true. I don't walk around throwing salt over my shoulder or anything, but in most cases I would rather believe that all things are possible than think them impossible.
