How far back into your childhood (by age) can you truly recall things or events with great detail?

I can remember pretty far back, probably about age three. The memories aren't long, but they are pretty detailed. I can see them like pictures in my mind.

Judy, 62

Probably around the age of five. I can remember events in Kindergarten and on up. But not much before then.

Janet, 45

I can remember stuff from when I was as young as three, but it's not crystal-clear or anything.

As I'm sure my Mother (Judy from Kansas on this board) would tell you, I can remember things I have no business remembering. I can recall being in a crib and a daddy-long-legs crawling on me and me freaking out (also, I remember that the crib was by the window in the upstairs bedroom). I remember our cousin's dog getting "skunked" while we were on a camping trip. I remember peeking around the corner into the living room (before the basement was finished) after my bedtime and getting spanked (I also remember not ever wanting my dad to spank me again!) I remember my first day of kindergarden and could probably tell you the names of 75% of the people in my class. I remember lots of other things... some big, some small... and I'm glad I can remember them.

I have many vivid memories from early childhood, but they are isolated memories, frequently with no context.

I can recall certain events as far back as when I was 4 or 5 years old. I'm really sensitive to smells... they trigger a lot of memories for me.Some details are more vivid than others... for me, the crappier times (there weren't a lot during my childhood) seem to be remembered in greater detail.

Fisch, 47
Preston, CT USA

I think most of my memories start around second grade.

Ryan, 29
Riedlingen GERMANY

Unfortunately, my childhood was a little on the rocky side, so I have very few clear memories. The majority of them are based on stories that have been told over and over so I don't even know if my
memories are true ones or if I am recalling tales. I have clear memories from about grade 6.

Cindy, 41

I have memories from around 3 or 4. Running in the fields out back with my friend Dorothy from across the street. Watching the ferris wheel at the county fair from the front law of our house. My mom giving my brother and I a bath. Sleeping in my crib across from my brother. I could even sketch the layout of our first house which we moved from just before I turned 4.

Felicia, 37

Very young. I have distinct memories of being pushed in the carriage with the netting over it. It was a very sunny day and my mother was pushing the carriage down the cut-out from our neighbor's driveway, heading towards Hillsdale Rd. I definitely remember the time the oven caught fire. I was in the play pen set up in the little space between the kitchen and the living
room. Then there was the time I was trying to get out of the crib. I bounced on the mattress to get my leg over the top bar. The mattress fell out and I was left hanging. I've heard that if you had a stable childhood you are more likely to have very early childhood memories.

Laura, 38
Lowell, MA USA

I was two years old when my aunt moved and I have a vivid, tactile memory of being allowed to carry her fuzzy pink slippers into her new house. Other than that, I can remember things from about age four.

Jane, 63
West Linn, OR USA

Back until I was 5.

Aly, 17

I've got some memories from when I was 3. That's pretty good right?

A-Dog, 20

I can remember things that happened on the day of my third birthday. My mom was giving me a bath before the party and got soap in my eye, and I cried because it stung. At the party, I remember walking around with a bag of party hats and offering them to our guests.

Cathie, 53
Novi, MI USA

About 5 or 6.

I can remember certain things from a very young age, like perhaps 2 or 3, though not with great detail. I can remember standing up in my crib watching my mother bustling around my room. I can remember her sitting in a rocker beside my crib at night. I would reach my little hand out between the "bars" and she would hold my hand as I fell asleep. As for recalling things
with great detail...I guess I would have to say around 5 or 6. I remember the details of my school and home life at this age with vivid details!

Tam

I'd say when I was three. I clearly remember many details of my battle with chicken pox...it was awful!

Tracy, 24
Ocean City, NJ USA

4 years old

Melodi, 19
Gahanna, OH USA

Even High school is a blurr. But I do remember things that happened to me when I was a few months old. I asked my mom about it and she said there is no way I would know that since I was so young. But I do.

Stephanie, 27

3 With great detail? I have a hard time with that. Maybe somewhere between five and seven. Possibly, sadly, later.
